5th Grade Goes to a Dairy Farm

November 02, 2026

The 5th Grade class traveled to McCarty Family Farms on Wednesday, October 28th.  We toured their dairy farm and learned about everything that happens before the milk gets to the grocery store.  The kids got to see their milking carousels that milk 125 cows at a time, which happen to be the largest carousels in the world.   They viewed the milk cooling room and the trucks being filled with the fresh milk. A shuttle bus took students on a tour of the farm where we went into the barns, saw how the cows are fed, how the barns are cleaned, and how they make the best use of natural resources in order to take care of the environment.  The learning center that is located at the dairy had multiple hands on interactive activities that students could play that included milking a replica cow, mixing the correct ingredients to feed the cows before time runs out, testing the back scratchers that the cows use, and learning what products the McCarty dairy's milk actually goes into.  To end the tour, we each got to sample a yogurt product that was made using the milk from McCarty Dairy.
